This contemporary retail gallery might be a platform for premium New Zealand art and design, but it’s also a welcoming, family-friendly place. There’s a kids’ corner where you can keep small proverbial bulls away from the china – in this case, fine New Zealand ceramics – as well as gifts and books for children.
As well as original paintings, photography and sculptural pieces, there is jewellery, pounamu, glassworks, weaving, books and handmade gifts, cards and homewares. The common thread is contemporary New Zealand talent, with a special focus on Maori art – and a certain something that pleases the keen eye of founder Melanie Jane Smith.
The accessibility and openness of the gallery reflects its genesis as a family enterprise, run by Melanie Jane and husband Clayton, whose life with their two daughters is at the heart of the business. The Poi Room takes its name from the vibrant Maori poi dance, celebrating the poi’s visual and aesthetic power and sense of life.
